VIGNETTE/TOLL

On motorways, all vehicles under 3.5 tonnes must have a vignette. Attention, this also applies to motorcycles! If you're only going for a race weekend, you'll probably use a 10-day vignette.

Motorway vignettes in Hungary are electronic only. It can be purchased here, on the official website. You can buy the vignette in advance. After filling in your vehicle details, you can conveniently pay by card and get on the road. You can also buy a vignette for Hungary at shops and petrol stations marked e-VIGNETTE or MATRICA.

ALCOHOL BEHIND THE WHEEL

There is zero alcohol tolerance in Hungary. If a driver is caught with a blood alcohol content of up to 0.8 per mile, he or she will be fined. Fines range from HUF 50,000 (€135) to HUF 200,000 (€540). If the amount of alcohol in the blood is higher than 0.8 per mile, the driver is fined, and criminal proceedings are initiated.

WHAT TO DO IF I GET A FINE

Police officers in Hungary are communicative and friendly, but they can be adamant if you break the rules. And it's not just in traffic.

If you get a ticket for the speed measured by the automatic system, the police will notify the car owner by letter. We recommend that you pay the fine, which is usually no more than a few tens of euros unless the speed excess was marginal. And it's safer than risking unpleasantness with the police the next time you visit Hungary.
